CPC periodic training

Driver CPC Periodic Training

Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) training is continuing professional development which carries on throughout the drivers’ career. Drivers will have to complete a minimum of 35 hours of approved training every 5 years.

If a driver holds both a Passenger Carrying Vehicles (PCV) and Large Goods Vehicles (LGV) licence they will only be required to complete one set of periodic training.

New drivers must complete their first cycle of periodic training within 5 years of the date they acquired their Driver CPC.

Existing professional bus, coach and lorry drivers deemed to hold Driver CPC by acquired rights, must complete their periodic training within 5 years of the introduction of Driver CPC as follows:

  • 9 September 2013 for PCV licence holders
  • 9 September 2014 for LGV licence holders.

Drivers who do not maintain their Driver CPC because they leave the industries, but who want to resume working as a professional driver, must complete 35 hours of periodic training in order to regain their Driver CPC before they can resume working professionally.

Only approved courses taken with approved training centres will count towards periodic training.

Subjects

Periodic training is designed to complement the individual drivers work and be relevant to their everyday job. Courses may include defensive driving techniques, first aid, health & safety, driver’s hour’s regulations and tachographs. Courses will also enable drivers to keep up to date with changing regulations. The syllabus broadly covers:

• Safe and fuel efficient driving

• Legal requirements

• Health and Safety, service and logistics.

There is no requirement for a course to include a test or pass/fail element.

Duration

The minimum length of a training course is 7 hours contact time with the trainer.

Where a course of 7 hours is split into two parts the second must start within 24 hours of completion of the first part.

Approval process for delivering Periodic Training

The approval process for courses is managed on behalf of The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT).

All training centres and courses are subject to audit and approval, and may be withdrawn if either are found to be non-compliant with the approval criteria, or if trainers delivering the training are not suitably experienced.

Trainers are not required to be formally approved, but training centres will have to certify that anyone used to deliver periodic training is suitably experienced, both in the subject matter and in teaching methods.

A guide to Periodic Training for Employers and Training Providers to the Road Passenger and Road Freight Industries, including application forms for the approval of training centres and courses is available to download via the following link:

Recording Driver CPC training records

DSA provides a database to record the training hours completed by each driver. It is the responsibility of the approved Driver CPC training providers to enter records into this database.

A brief outline of the process is:

• The service is accessed via the Transportoffice website and users sign-in using their Government Gateway ID (there is a one-off process to enrol and obtain this ID).

• The relevant course is selected from a drop-down list and the course completion date is entered.

• All attendees’ driver licence number details are entered.

The system calculates a fee and payment is made online using credit/ debit card (the system stores credit/ debit card details to save you re-entering them each time).
